FamilyQ: My heat doesn't go on. What should I check?

A: Here is a list of the most common items to check before you call for service.
  1. Be sure emergency switch is on.
  2. Check all fuses and circuit breakers.
  3. Be sure the thermostat is set 5 degrees or more above room temperature.
  4. Check to see if the water is at the proper level (steam systems only).
  5. Check the clock thermostat to see if it is working properly.
  6. Push the "reset button" on the burner. ONLY ONCE!
  7. If burner fails to ignite, turn emergency switch to "off" and call Dominick Fuel's service department, (203) 866-5836.

Q: My child hit the "emergency switch" and it went Off and On, is this a concern?

A: No, this is not a concern.

Q: Can this cause damage to my furnace?

A: It is highly unlikely that this will cause a problem to your unit.

Q: How often should I get my furnace cleaned?

A: Your heating unit should be serviced once a year to keep it working at peek efficiency.

Q: There is black soot around the smoke pipe - is this a problem?

A: Yes, this could be a sign of the unit not performing at peek efficiency. We should come and service the unit at your earliest convenience.

Q: I hear water rushing through my pipes. What is it?

A: Most likely you have air in your system. You need to have us purge the air out of your system.

Q: When I turn on my heat I hear banging in the walls for the first 5 or so minutes. What is it?

A: The pipes expand and contract when they are heated and cooled. Most likely, what you are hearing are the pipes rubbing against the wood in the walls and floors. After they have been expanded, you will not hear any more banging until the next time the heat comes on and the pipes are expanded again.

Q: I would like to know how I can tell if I need a new furnace?

A: We need to come and evaluate your system to be able to advise you on the best course of action, if any is needed.
